There is a crucial election for Sheriff in Hampton, VA in November. So, we want to highlight some powers and privileges of the Sheriff’s Office in this week’s Civics Lesson.
Virginia Sheriffs are responsible for law enforcement, jail administration, service to the courts, and promoting DARE programs. Hampton Sheriffs specifically maintain the custody, care, control, and movement of incarcerated individuals, serve civil and criminal processes and court orders, and maintain security for court facilities, judges, jurors, and other trial participants. Sheriffs are constitutional officers that derive their power directly from the VA Constitution and are elected every 4 years.
