VOTER INFORMATION
2024 VA ELECTION DATES
Updated 11/3/24
ELECTION DAY: The General Election is TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 5TH, at your local polling precincts from 6:00 am – 7:00 pm. To find your voting location for Election Day, please visit bit.ly/GoVoteVirginia.
Check Your Status!– Go to bit.ly/GoVoteVirginia to ensure your voter status is ACTIVE, confirm that your voter information is correct, track your absentee ballot by mail, locate your polling place, see your voting history, and more! If you are listed as inactive or not in the system, see the section below on Same-Day Voter Registration! You can still vote!
FREE Rides on HRT on Election Day: To help voters get to the polls, riding Hampton Roads Transit (HRT) buses, light rail, ferry, paratransit, and upcoming micro transit will be free on Election Day, Nov. 5. Read more here.
Absentee Ballot Return: If you apply for an absentee ballot and it is mailed to you, you must return it for your vote to count. During early voting, you can return your ballot in person at the Voter Registrar’s Office. On Election Day, you can return your ballot in person at the Voter Registrar’s Office or your local polling place by 7:00 pm on November 5th. If you plan to mail your ballot back in, it must be postmarked by November 5th and received within 3 business days. Don’t let mail delays invalidate your vote. Take it back or mail it back as soon as possible!
Same-Day Voter Registration – Did you know you can register to vote and vote on the same day? During early voting and on Election Day, if you need to register or update your voter registration information, you can do so. You’ll fill out the voter registration form, show your voter ID, and vote using a provisional ballot. Your ballot will be counted once the registrar’s office verifies your information. Are you registered somewhere else and did not return your absentee ballot or did not vote there? You can register to vote in your local Virginia area. Read more here.
Voter Identification – In VA, you can use various forms of ID to vote. For a detailed list of acceptable IDs, visit bit.ly/VoterIDListVA – If you do not have any of the listed forms of identification, you can vote and sign a statement affirming your identity and vote by regular ballot. If you do not want to sign the statement, you can vote by provisional ballot, but with that process, you have to submit your valid ID by noon on Friday after Election Day.
Encountered a Problem? They can help! – If you encounter any issues while trying to vote, you can speak with a trained volunteer at the non-partisan Election Protection Hotline. You can call or text 866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683) or visit their multilingual website at https://866ourvote.org/

Pre-register online with your valid DMV-issued ID at bit.ly/GoVoteVirginia or visit your local Voter Registrar’s office. You then will be ready to vote when you turn 18.
Restoration of Voting Rights – If you were convicted of a felony and are no longer incarcerated, you can apply to have your voting rights restored or check the status of your application at Restore.Virginia.Gov – Unfortunately, the current Governor is restoring fewer people’s rights than the last 3 previous Governors, but it is worth a try.
